Waikato farmer’s trust contributes $3 million to students’ study
36 of the region's secondary school leavers have each been awarded a $6000 scholarship to put towards their tertiary fees or accommodation costs at the University of Waikato or Wintec next year.
Their windfall comes from the David Johnstone Charitable Trust, which awards scholarships to Waikato secondary school students embarking on a science or teaching qualification at the University of Waikato or Wintec.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the scholarship programme with over $3 million awarded to around 600 students' tertiary studies during that time.
Administered by Perpetual Guardian, the David Johnstone Charitable Trust scholarships are one of the most significant scholarships awarded in the Waikato in terms of the number of students assisted every year.
Nola Delaney, Trustee of the David Johnstone Charitable Trust, said it is a pleasure each year to help continue David's legacy and see Waikato youth succeed.
"To be awarded a David Johnstone Charitable Trust scholarship, these students have demonstrated that they are all-rounders and can apply themselves," said Delaney.
"We look for candidates with good academic skills so they can successfully complete their tertiary studies, along with other attributes that we believe David would have approved of," she adds.
David Johnstone was born in 1909 to one of the Waikato region's pioneering farming families. He passed away in February 1990.
Delaney said his farming success was great; however his overarching desire to have had a better education himself prompted him to leave a sizeable chunk of his estate to form the David Johnstone Charitable Trust.
"His genuine desire to see young people succeed and the large contribution he has left are testament to his good will and character. His legacy will enable many more promising Waikato students to get a financial head start on their tertiary education."
Tomorrow (Wednesday, 9 December 2015) 36 students from across the Waikato will be acknowledged at an awards ceremony in Hamilton in front of 200 guests.
This year's scholarship recipients come from 19 Waikato schools including Cambridge, Hamilton, Tokoroa, Thames, Matamata, Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Piopio, Otorohanga, Taumarunui, Te Kauwhata and Te Awamutu.

Student nominations are received from schools within the Trust's designated distribution area extending from Te Kauwhata in the north to Tokoroa and Taumarunui in the south, east to the Coromandel Peninsula, including Thames, Whitianga, Coromandel, Whangamata and Waihi, and to Raglan in the west; a total of 39 schools. Each school can nominate one student in each of the three study categories - University of Waikato science and teaching, and Waikato Institute of Technology.
